A Discord server for Yuga Labs, creators of the Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT series, was hacked over the weekend. The breach resulted in a phishing attack with over $360,000 in stolen NFTs.

NFT owners often gather on Discord servers to organize and talk about their collection. The server has already suffered two phishing attacks this year, making this the third time the server has been hacked. Yuga Labs confirmed news of the scam targeting the Discord server in a tweet, saying it was actively investigating the incident.

The Discord account of BAYC staff member and community manager for the project, Boris Vagner, has been hacked. The hacked account then posted phishing links on official channels associated with the BAYC Discord server and its metaverse project, Otherside. The promised compromised account targets an exclusive giveaway with a phishing link.

“As a reminder, we do not offer mints or surprise gifts,” the official Yuga Labs Twitter account tweeted after the incident. The group provided an email address to affected users to report the theft. At this time, it is unclear how the targeted users will be compensated for the stolen NFTs. It’s also unclear how Universal Music Group plans to build a digital band out of something that’s mostly associated with poor artwork and scams.

In April 2022, two similar phishing attacks were executed against the same Discord server. According to the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Privacy Data Report, online users have lost a collective billion dollars in crypto to scams since the start of 2021. It’s unclear how the manager’s Discord account community was compromised at that time.

Bored Ape Yacht Club co-founder Gordon Goner pointed the finger at Discord. “Discord not working for web3 communities”, the tweet begin. “We need a better platform that puts security first.” Discord is the most popular communication tool among NFT communities, but it’s designed as a gamer-oriented version of Slack.
