Benjamin’s Micah Mays thrills as Bucs trail sweeps district titles

PALM BEACH GARDENS — Benjamin’s track programs cleaned up at home as the Buccaneers hosted the District 13-1A Track and Field Championships on Monday.

“We were pretty confident the boys were going to come in and take care of business, but our district was really strong on the girls’ side, so for them to step in and compete like that and empty a district title — I couldn’t be more proud of them,” Bucs head coach Barrett Saunders said.

The Benjamin girls shared their district title with Oxbridge after the teams tied on 166 points each. The boys’ program continued its trend of marginal wins, highlighted by a commanding performance from junior Micah Mays.

Mays contributed first place in the individual 400m, high jump and triple jump as the Buccaneers won 275 points. He then rallied the Bucs 4×400 relay team from third to first on the final leg of the competition’s final race.

Mays has 14 first-place finishes during the season, including a seven-game streak in the 400m, setting a Palm Beach County Championship record time of 48.73 seconds.

Heading into regionals, Mays has already surpassed the 12 gold medals he won as a sophomore in 2021, a benchmark of progress that signifies growth for the young athlete.

Mays’ method of madness? Do as the greats do.

“I feel like if I do what a legend does, I can get to that level on the track,” Mays said.

Saunders said Mays’ work ethic sets him apart from other athletes he’s coached, but so does Mays’ training regimen which is more common among professionals than your typical 17-year-old. .

Epsom salt baths, massage guns, stretching, proper nutrition and cryotherapy keep Mays performing consistently every time he hits the starting line, averaging 49.7 seconds out of 400 Mr.

“Whether it’s football or athletics, he’ll be the first or the last to go. He trains, warms up, does whatever a coach tells him to do,” Saunders said, attributing to Mays its growth off the pitch.

“Now that he’s a junior, he’s taking on that leadership role and he was the leader of the men’s team to help win that district title today.”

On the boys’ side, Cardinal Newman took second place with 104 points and Pahokee third with 98.5. The Pahokee Girls also earned third place, finishing with 129 points.

Members of the Benjamin Women's Track and Field Team celebrate winning the District Championship on Monday, April 18, 2022 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
