Billings Youth Orchestra and Billings Symphony Orchestra merge

The Billings Youth Orchestra has been renamed Billings Symphony Youth Orchestra effective Friday, July 1.

According to a press release Thursday, the Billings Symphony acquired the nonprofit after the two organizations’ boards of directors decided to merge in May. This merger allows young musicians to broaden their skills and develop their talent in the Montana region.

“Youth orchestras play an important role in the development of young people’s lives,” said Anne Harrigan, music director of the Billings Symphony. “I am delighted that the Billings Youth Orchestra is part of the Billings Symphony. Together, we are ready to make even more of a difference in the lives of young people in our community.

Over the past 16 years, the Billings Youth Orchestra has flourished, providing musical opportunities for young minds. They have a total of four orchestras: Young Artist, Concert, Repertoire and Preludio Strings. The organization also has two ensembles for young musicians, The Montana Fiddle Club and Repertory Winds. Students in these youth orchestra programs develop a deep appreciation for orchestral music. Many students in the program pursue careers in music, performing with professional ensembles and orchestras across the country.

Stacey Casterline, Chair of the Billings Youth Orchestra Board of Trustees, says this merger will create a lasting bond with the Magic City’s most respected orchestra. “Our talented young musicians will benefit from the mentorship of professional musicians and greater opportunity to perform. This union also brings additional exposure to all that orchestral music has to offer the community,” Casterline said.

All normal operations of the Billings Youth Orchestra will continue while providing performance opportunities under the Billings Symphony. Billing Youth Orchestra conductors will continue to lead orchestras and ensembles in the youth program. Billings Youth Symphony Orchestra concerts are now presented by the Billings Symphony Orchestra, in addition to their annual season. This also includes the Billings Symphony Family Series with concerts on December 4 and April 30, 2023. These concerts are free and donations for youth orchestra concerts are encouraged.
