California Cousins Preparing New ‘Secret Footage’ Album (Stream a Track)

Rochester emo group California Cousins will release their second full album, Secret picturesJune 3 through Unstable Acrobat. “As of this year, Christian, Juan, and I have been making music together as California Cousins for 10 years, which is pretty crazy to think about,” vocalist/bassist Jordan Serrano tells us. “We don’t have a huge catalog, but given that our first release was an (admittedly embarrassing) easycore EP in 2012, we’ve definitely come a long way. Now, with Secret picturesit feels like we’ve finally refined the sound we’ve been turning to for years.”

“We took what worked on our last LP, [2018’s] Distant relatives, and refined it a bit,” Jordan continues. “We tried to make the heavy parts heavier and the catchy parts more catchy, never locking ourselves into a specific genre. Ultimately, we’re hoping that pulling from all of our influences at once will resonate with listeners in the sense that there’s a little something for everyone, but if not, at least we’re playing what we want to play!”

You can hear this array of influences on lead single “Patterns”, which starts out in mathy/noodly emo Midwestern territory before turning into a big shouto/post-hardcore rager at the end. It’s a very promising taste of this LP and you can hear it below.

As previously mentioned, California Cousins opens Prince daddy and the hyenathe next tour of, alongside MacSeal and Insignificant Other.
