How to Customize Swipe Gestures in Gmail App on Android and iPhone

Here is the step-by-step guide to customize swipe gestures in Gmail app on Android and iPhone devices.

Every day our inbox is flooded with a number of messages which include important promotions and official emails as well as other updates from family and friends. Gmail is the best option for regularly accessing emails. It provides you with an interface which will make it easier to use several features by not switching between various other applications. The inbox can be managed using various features that will make it look good and manageable.

One of the features is the ‘Swiping Gesture’ which is a shortcut function to perform some specific tasks. Mail can be archived or held at your fingertips by swiping right or left. You can customize various features, such as deleting an email, marking an email as read or unread and also moving the mail to a separate folder.



Step 1: Open the Gmail app on your Apple device.

2nd step: Now click on the hamburger menu present at the top left corner of the app.

Step 3: Scroll down to the settings button on your iPhone.

Step 4: Next, find the Email Swipe Actions button and tap it.

Step 5: Then the user will get two swipe gestures.

Step 6: By clicking on the right swipe option, you can also change the default archive option.

Step 7: You can replace it with tray, mark as read/unread, repeat, move or no option as per user choice.

Step 8: Now repeat the above steps similarly for the left swipe option.


Step 1: Open the Gmail app on your Android device.

2nd step: In the upper left corner of the screen, there will be a hamburger menu. Then press it.

Step 3: Next, scroll down to the Settings button.

Step 4: Next, open general settings and look for mail scan actions button and click on it.

Step 5: The user can select the right swipe option and choose a gesture as per their choice.

Step 6: Now tap the left swipe option selecting the preferred gesture while changing the default option.
