The Discord Community Server is a real-time chat platform that non-gamers can also use. You can create a free community server to connect with people around the world who have the same interests as you. To set up a community server, download and open the Discord app. You will see a registration area where you will be asked for personal information so that you can log in. A window will open in which you need to select “Create mine”. It’s better to have templates for a faster process so you can scroll down and select “Local Community”. Select For a club or community.

If you already have an existing Discord server with members, you can make it a community server and make it public. First select your server name in the upper left corner and select “Server Settings” from the drop-down menu. In the Community section of the settings, select Enable community, then select Get started (see right side of screen). A window opens where you can select the Community Server settings. If you want only people with a verified email address to join your server, you can select “A verified email address is required”.

How to Create a Community Server on Discord

  • To start setting up a community server, download the Discord app (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux), open it, and sign in.
  • You can create a community server from scratch just like you create your own Discord server. First, click the big plus (+) icon in the left column to create a new server.
  • In the next window that appears, select “Create my own” if you want to create a community server from scratch. It’s a good idea to use ready-made templates, so scroll down a bit and choose “Local Community”.
  • Then select “For a club or community”.
  • Type the server name in the box and, if you wish, upload a display image for your server (although you can always do this later). Press “Create”.
  • This will create a new community server with relevant channels.

How to Change Discord Server to Community Server

  • If you have an existing private server with many members, you can convert it to a community server. To do this, select your server name in the upper left corner and choose “Server Settings” from the drop-down menu.
  • In your server settings menu, click on the “Enable Community” option under the “Community” section in the left column and select the “Get Started” button on the right side.
  • This reveals a window where you can choose your Community Server settings. Check the “Verified email required” box to allow only people with verified email to join your community server.
  • Next, check the “Scan media from all members” box to allow Discord to automatically scan and delete media if it contains explicit content. Then click the “Next” button to continue.
  • If you want Discord to automatically create a new Community Rules & Updates channel, click Next. Or, you can use the drop-down menu to choose the channel for Community Guidelines and Updates. Then click “Next”.
  • Check the “Default notifications for mentions only” box if you want your server to send notifications for mentions only.
  • Check the “Remove moderation permissions for @everyone” box to revoke all moderator-level permissions for all members.
  • Finally, check the “I agree and understand” box if you agree to follow Discord’s rules for community servers.
  • After checking the appropriate boxes, select the “Finish Setup” button. Discord shows you a banner telling you that “Your server is now a community server”.
  • In the “Server description” section, add a description of your community server. This description will appear when you create custom invite links when embedding them on social media, messengers, or other sites. Once done, hit the “Save Changes” button at the bottom.
