Updates

(12:03 p.m.) Dwol wins the 4A triple jump, resetting the top national mark. Mullen senior Agur Dwol re-established herself as the top high school triple jumper in the nation with a jump of 42 feet and 5.5 inches. The University of Oklahoma’s commitment kicked off the afternoon with the longest women’s high school triple jump mark in the nation this year (41-11.75). Dwol is also the favorite to win the girls 4A long jump. —Kyle Frederickson

(11:50 a.m.) Niwot back. There were no surprises in the early 4A stints. In the Girls 4A 4×800, Niwot won with a time of 9:24.75, while Durango took second place with a time of 9:33.13. In the boys 4×800, Cheyenne Mountain came close to setting the state meet record but finished just behind the pace with a time of 7:50.31. Durango’s 2019 record (7:48.60) will stand for another year. Longmont anchor Connor McCormick closed well and helped them finish second with a time of 7:52.34. —Brendan Ploen

(11:24 a.m.) Bruins defend relay title. Cherry Creek took the Women’s Class 5A 4×800 meter crown with a time of 9:12.63, while Denver East was second in 9:22.02 and Arapahoe took third in 9:22.99 . For Cherry Creek, led by Riley Stewart, it was a far cry from their state record (8:53.43), but the Bruins are back-to-back state champions. In the 5A boys 4×800 class, Cherokee Trail won with a time of 7:52.07 and beat the four riders from Mountain Vista, who took second place with a time of 7:54.96 and Rocky Mountain won bronze with a time of 7:57.66. —Brendan Ploen

(10:30 a.m.) Costelo claims the title in the boys’ 3200 meters 5A. The boys 5A distance field is wide open this year with former Cherry Creek star Parker Wolfe now competing in varsity for North Carolina. This opened the door Thursday for Valor Christian junior Drew Costello, a freshman transfer from Center Grove High School, Indiana, to win the 3200 meters title with a time of 9:19.18. Costelo said: “I sat and visualized from round one to round eight last night. So, I entered this race today having already won it. … I wanted to take it back with 1,000 meters to go. My teammate (Dane Eike, who finished second) kind of worked me out a bit. I didn’t expect him to do that. … It’s better because I share my success with my friends. —Kyle Frederickson

(10:06 a.m.) Stewart heads for the 5A women’s 3,200-meter title. Cherry Creek senior Riley Stewart topped the field to win the 5A girls 3200m race with a time of 10:34.08 – almost 10 seconds ahead of second place Emily Lamontagne (10:42.82) . Stewart, a Stanford clerk, said, “I felt pretty confident. But some people can have really good days. I just arrived knowing that you always have to adapt to others. … We’re trying to get the most points this week. I just did it for my team. —Kyle Frederickson

(8:00 a.m.) Here we go. The first day of the state track is on and it could be the only one of three to reach the top 60 degrees. Apart from a few distance and relay finals, today is a day mostly set aside for championship field events and preliminary races. A few things we are going to have an eye on: 1) Mullen senior Agur Dwol, owner of the longest women’s triple jump mark in the country (41ft, 11.75in), will be competing in her specialty just 30 minutes from the start competition; 2) Around the same time, Cherry Creek distance runner Riley Stewart will be looking to defend the first of her three 2021 5A titles: the 3,200 meters. —Matt Schubert
