LPS recruits bus drivers, paras with Fast Track Hiring Day

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Lincoln Public Schools needs full-time and part-time bus drivers and transportation paraprofessionals. LPS sped up the process on Wednesday with its Accelerated Hire Day.

After completing an application and interviewing, qualified candidates were offered employment on the spot, pending successful completion of background and reference checks.

“We’re looking at about 40 driver positions available and about 50 paraprofessional positions available,” said Ryan Robley, director of transportation for LPS. “The last Fast Track to Hire we had was a huge success, so hopefully this one can kind of keep up with that and can bring us more success and bring us more skilled riders.”

According to Robley, schools are facing a shortage of bus drivers that has lasted for more than a decade. After the pandemic worsened the shortage, LPS adapted by consolidating the number of lines from 156 to 128.

“Here, we have always struggled with that. It’s been a bit cyclical,” Robley said. “We started the year with a little less staff, then finally we went up. But as the pandemic hit, we noticed that much of our workforce shrank — left.

Some benefits include CDL training, $23 per hour, a $1,500 signing bonus for drivers, and a $1,000 bonus for paras. Driving hours are 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and/or 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. with the possibility of working in the middle of the day.

“We’re going to do training this summer for drivers,” said Jessi Stillwagon, district human resources specialist. “They are automatically eligible for benefits. Retiring at LPS is great, so lots of benefits to being employed at Lincoln Public Schools. Great people, and it’s meaningful work. It makes a big difference for the children.

LPS has scheduled two additional hiring days for those wishing to apply. The first will be on June 10 at Pound Middle School and the next on July 15 at Culler Middle School. The events will focus on transportation, but LPS is also looking for caretakers, paraeducators, secretaries, health technicians and positions in nutrition services.

Candidates will need to bring a valid driver’s license, their social security card and a valid email address. They should also share their work history, including dates of employment, company names, addresses, phone numbers, and the names and email addresses of their former supervisors. Three references are also required for each candidate.
