MANCUNION EXCLUSIVE: UoM and MMU to merge to form Britain’s first ‘Super-Uni’

Correspondence between the University of Manchester (UoM) and Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) has been leaked to La Mancunionvia an anonymous source, which reveals merger plans between the two establishments.

Unification would result in a student body of nearly 80,000, making it the largest student population in the nation.

Although the news may seem surprising at first glance, the UoM has already experienced a merger of institutions. In 2004Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) merged to form what we now call the University.

The Mancunions A source expressed hope that the merger will create “a very robust new institution enriched by the legacy of the previous two”.

An argument in favor of the merger is the proximity of universities. Since many facilities are already shared and UoM and MMU are adjacent, merging the campuses would be quite feasible.

Universities are no strangers to sharing, as many degrees from both institutes require facilities from both campuses. At UoM, for example, the architecture requires the theoretical component to be undertaken on campus, while the technical aspects require MMU facilities and resources. Creating a cohesive campus could benefit students by expanding the range of degrees available at each institution.

The emails, which we are unable to share at this time, explained that another main reason for the merger was that it would improve the integration of arts courses into academia. MMU is celebrated for its creative courses and professional degrees, while UoM is recognized as a research institute.

Even though both universities have their strengths, there is a long-standing rivalry over which degree is more accredited. Although largely harmless, the rivalry can sometimes be upsetting and even detrimental to the mindset of students. Forming a “Super-Uni” – as mentioned in the subject lines – would hopefully dispel any competition and create a more inclusive and unified campus.

It is not yet known what the new official title of the “Super Uni” will be. Head over to our Instagram story to vote on what you think this should be!
