The municipality is currently part of the electoral district of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, but “is a lower-tier municipality under the united counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry,” according to the North Glengarry website.

Electoral districts are established at the federal level and are the same for both federal and provincial elections. Boundaries are enacted provincially through the Ontario Representation Act, which details district boundaries across the province.

The reasoning is that the interests of North Glengarry could be better served if it could be included in the electoral district of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry, aligning it naturally within the boundaries of the United Counties of SDG and its opportunities for development and growth,” reads a statement on the municipality’s website.

North Glengarry staff declined to provide an update on the community’s response so far, writing that it will be reported to township council at a later date.

Electoral boundaries must be revised after each decennial (10 year) census to reflect any changes in population, as required by Canada’s constitution.

According to a staff report presented to North Glengarry Council, “confusion is caused for the electorate of North Glengarry Township when they align themselves on municipal issues with the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, and on federal and provincial issues with the counties of Glengarry-Electoral district of Prescott-Russell.

The multi-year process would not see new electoral districts until 2024. The two-question poll is available at North Glengarry website. Residents can request a hard copy, submit questions to [email protected] or call 613-525-1110 ext. 352 for more information.
