A throwback initiative invites Brock University students to track their sustainable actions for a chance to win prizes.
Hosted by Brock in partnership with Blackstone Energy Services, the Welcome Back Sustainability Challenge asks students to log their environmental efforts to earn points from Monday, September 12 through Friday, September 16. Similar to the challenges held last year, a variety of actions will earn students points, such as using a reusable water bottle, carpooling, eating leftovers, turning off the tap while brushing teeth , etc.
“This challenge is a great way to learn how easy it is to make a positive difference to the environment; many students are already doing these things,” said Mary Quintana, Brock’s Director of Asset Management and Utilities. “It’s also an opportunity to learn additional things we can do to enhance our positive impact.”
At the end of the week, the 10 students with the highest scores will win a prize.
The top five students will be entered into a raffle to win one of three Apple products: an Apple iPad, Apple Watch or Apple AirPods. The two students not chosen in the draw will automatically win a $75 Campus Store gift card, and the students with the highest scores from 6th to 10th place will each receive a $25 Campus Store gift card.
Students can register for the challenge by downloading for free Blackstone Energy EcoBoss app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
Once the app is downloaded, follow these four steps:
- Create an account using your Brock email and enter Brock’s challenge code: badgers
- Click the badge icon to join the Brock “Welcome Back Sustainability Challenge”
- Tap the green “Join Challenge” button
From there, participants will be ready to start recording lasting action once the competition begins at 7 a.m. on Monday, September 12.
“Community and stakeholder engagement is an important part of our energy and carbon reduction efforts,” said Tim Schneider, president of Blackstone Energy Services. “We are proud to partner with an institution like Brock that continues to be a leader in its commitment to sustainability and lower carbon emissions.”
The goal of the Sustainability Challenge is to encourage students to adopt more sustainable habits on campus and at home by showing how easy it is to make simple yet impactful changes every day.
