Track specialist Aston Barak on track for the Goulburn Cup Glory

FALLS Creek coach Jason Fletcher says the first 10 strides will go a long way in deciding the fate of his star sprinter Aston Barak in Friday’s Goulburn Cup final.

Goulburn proved a happy hunting ground for Aston Barak in the second half of this year.

Aston’s son Dee Bee was the Southern Stars’ first $50,000 winner in July and then ended superstar She’s A Pearl’s unbeaten winning streak in the Regional Million Dollar Chase Qualifier.

Aston Barak will jump from box five in Friday’s $40,000 Goulburn Cup final, where he is the fastest qualifier in 24.49 seconds.

He won seven of his nine starts on the track with a personal best 24.29.

“I would say the first 20 yards will decide our fate on Friday,” Fletcher said. “Square five is the worry.

“I’m not a fan of box five, but that’s what we have, so we have to make the best of the situation.

“I hope I see him with Yuko Girl in the run to the corner and then it’s up to him.

“The dog is very good.

“He’s doing the best he’s ever done, so hopefully he just flies away and does what he does.”

Fletcher has put a lead and a collar on more than his fair share of class fighters, the best being Group 1 winner Fantastic Spiral, but when it comes to raw ability he says Aston Barak can match him with any of them.

“(Fantastic) Spiral has won a Group 1, Group 2 and Group 3 so he’s the best race dog I’ve trained, but when it comes to ability Barak is on par with them all” , did he declare.

“He’s not a record holder or anything, but he’s just a really good dog.

“He won 24 out of 52, but if he had better luck with draws at Wentworth Park his record would be even better than that.”

After Friday’s rich finale, Fletcher plans to ferry Aston Barak to Melbourne to prepare for the $1million Melbourne Cup rounds in November.

“I would love to have a chance at the Melbourne Cup with him,” he said.

“He’s got brilliant speed and he’s strong, so I think he’s worth a shot.”
