Woolworths is launching an app in dozens of Sydney suburbs that will see groceries delivered to your doorstep within an hour.

The grocery giant will launch ten new Sydney stores a week, with plans to come to Melbourne in the coming months.

Customers will have a minimum spend of $20. The groceries are then packed by staff and delivered to your door by an Uber delivery driver for an additional $5.

The app was successfully rolled out to seven Metro stores in Sydney last month and is now being rolled out across the city, from Vaucluse in the north to Malabar in the south.

Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Woolworths chief transformation officer Von Ingram said he’s seen customers repeatedly return to the app, giving them confidence that they’re on “the good thing”.

He added that they want to make sure we get the economy right and that Victoria “is absolutely, absolutely next”.

The move put Woolworths in direct competition with Door Dahs and Milk Run, which provide food and grocery delivery services.

Rival Coles offers a 90-minute click and collect service at select stores for an $11 fee.

Speaking to 9News retail expert Garry Mortimer, said speed is becoming “the new point of competition for online food and grocery competitors”.

“I think the challenge they face is range and price, you might be able to get a small selection or a slightly higher price delivered fairly quickly.”

It comes as customers of Coles and Woolworths see a price spike in the cost of groceries.

Coles says he was forced to raise the price of his milk due to increased packaging and transportation costs.

The price of Coles branded 3L fresh white milk will increase by 60c while 1L bottles will increase by 25c, and 2L bottles will cost an additional 50c.

The increase comes after Bunnings announced on Wednesday that its iconic sausage sizzle would see a $1 price hike.

A snag and bread will cost punters $3.50 instead of $2.50 after community groups saw a drop in funds raised for charity.

Rising costs of key ingredients such as meat, bread, onions, sauce and oil meant volunteers struggled to make a profit on the sizzles.

From August 1, Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and IGA are expected to raise prices for hundreds of products as suppliers of processed and packaged goods face increased costs.

Inflation rose to 5.1% in March over the previous 12 months, due to rising housing construction costs and fuel prices.
